Victor teacher’s legacy lives on through new playground
Victor, N.Y. —
The issue It’s been one year since Jill McDermott, a Dudley Elementary School teacher and Victor resident, lost her battle with cancer. A memorial fund established in her name is area serving school children in significant ways.
Background In the days following her passing on July 23, 2010, Mrs. McDermott’s Closet was launched — a virtual “e-closet” full of much-needed classroom supplies to benefit the Fairport-based school. To date, more than 30 first- and second-grade classrooms have received supplies after registering their wish lists at www.jillmcdermott.com. Plans for a new playground are also underway at Dudley Elementary School, where Mrs. McDermott taught.
What’s next Phase 1 of a $35,000 playground will be installed this summer and completed by the start of school in September. With an eye toward growth, designers planned for multiple additions in the future as more funds become available. The initial portion of the playground is being purchased completely by generous donations from the Dudley Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and the Jill R. McDermott Memorial Fund. Phase I is completely funded. Those wishing to contribute to either Mrs. McDermott’s Closet or the new playground may visit www.jillmcdermott.com for more information.
